宏基因組 ( Metagenome)(也稱微生物環境基因組Microbial Environmental Genome, 或元基因組)是由 Handelsman 等 1998 年提出的新名詞,即環境中全部微生物遺傳物質的總和。
宏基因組學(Metagenomics),一般指通過直接從特定生態環境樣品中提取全部微生物的DNA,進行高通量測序分析,研究環境微生物的群落結構、物種分類、系統進化、基因功能、代謝網絡及與其所在的生態環境間的互作情況等的一門學問。
